Get Some Surfing Lessons and Tips
If you are not surfing everyday or at least once a week then you probably should get a few pointers before hitting the breaks here in Maui. Especially if you are so lucky as to time your trip during a nice swell.
Finding companies and individuals willing to give you a lessons about surfing is not difficult in anyway. Finding good ones can sometimes be hard. Start with referrals and go from there. You can normally see many of these companies in action each morning. They are located all over the island and can be observed giving lessons on many of the local beaches near the hotels or large condo complexes. The calm mornings that normally have little to no wind makes for a great outdoor classroom.
If you find that you need a bit more help or some more advanced instruction or tips to really get you going, especially if you plan to ride bigger waves or hang out at certain breaks. It's helpful to have a guide who knows the area give you a leg up. It helps avoid issues with the locals when you jump into a wave, take a tumble and need to be helped out of a jam before being crushed against the jagged volcanic rocks.
Lessons are also important as they can expose you to using different boards or trying other surfing styles. You don't always need to surf the waves using the standard surf board. There are lots of other things like windsurfing and kite surfing. These two popular forms of surfing can be found in Maui and all over Hawaii. Surfing that requires the wind is best done on Maui's North shore. Each year during different times of the seasons the world's best windsurfers gather for competitions and gatherings. The miles of sandy beaches and amazing backdrops of the mountains make this a choice spot for may pros to train and live.
If you are lucky and know the right people you can request a private lesson from one of the local pro surfers. There are lots of the old timers who have been surfing for years who are more then happy to share their knowledge and teach a few things about handling the waves on Maui.
